Guided by the document Strategic Development 2003–2008, the University has experienced substantial development in the past five years. This University strategic document was a product of collective efforts and consensus, bringing achievements that belong to all in the HKU family. We are now presented with another opportunity to sharpen our institutional focus and to reaffirm our goal to maintain the University’s international acclaim and leverage its regional impact in the coming five years.

Two consultation sessions were held on 11 May 2009 and 15 May 2009 respectively to discuss with staff, students and alumni on the draft framework of strategic direction as formulated by the Senior Management Team of the University for the period 2009–2014. There were meaningful ideas expressed and fruitful debates over such core issues as the University’s role and mission, as well as ways to enhance our reputation.

As a continuation of the consultation exercise, an online feedback form was also available to provide an alternative and convenient channel for those who were not able to attend the above meetings and those who wished to express their opinions afterwards. Views and comments collected have been most useful for us to refine the strategic framework, and more importantly, to formulate plans for its implementation.

Formally approved by the University Council on 29 September 2009, the publication is now in production and will be released in November.
